Vanity (IDSCF)

Wildfire Status:

The Vanity Fire, which ignited on September 3 due to lightning, is currently active and located approximately 37 miles west of Challis, Idaho. As of the latest update, the fire has burned around 600 acres and is 20% contained. Fire management teams are observing minimal fire behavior, although there are instances of group tree torching in the afternoon. The incident is being overseen by Incident Commander Cummins, and a total of two personnel are engaged in the firefighting efforts.

In response to the fire, firefighting teams are focused on maintaining and improving point protection systems while constructing handlines between Baldwin Cabin Road and Seafoam Road. The estimated date for full containment is set for September 15, 2024. Current actions are aimed at minimizing the fire's spread and addressing any significant events as they arise.

Weather conditions in the area are presenting both challenges and opportunities for firefighting efforts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with snow levels rising to about 10,500 feet. While precipitation will decrease in the evening, an extended dry period is anticipated, with temperatures remaining below seasonal averages into the early part of next week. These conditions are critical for fire management as they can influence fire behavior and containment strategies moving forward.
