Black Eagle Fire (IDSCF)

Wildfire Status:

The Black Eagle Fire, located approximately 12 miles west of Forney in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, has been active since its detection on August 5, 2024. Currently, the fire has burned approximately 8,147 acres, with only 15% of its perimeter contained. The fire has been exhibiting active behavior, including backing, group torching, and short-range spotting, particularly in areas with receptive fuel beds and gusty winds. The incident has merged with the nearby Red Rock Fire, and all related updates can be found on the official incident page.

Firefighting efforts are being led by the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 3, under the command of Ken Watkins. The current strategy involves full suppression and point protection tactics, focusing on areas with a high probability of success. Plans include damage assessments and preemptive evacuation assessments to protect infrastructure and minimize threats to sage-grouse habitats. However, with the larger fire perimeter, additional values at risk are being evaluated as the situation develops.

Weather conditions in the area are contributing to the fire's activity. A dome of high pressure is located over the Four Corners region, bringing warm and dry conditions, with high temperatures expected in the mid-60s and humidity levels dropping to around 15-20%. Winds from the southwest are increasing, currently blowing at 12 mph with gusts reaching up to 24 mph, and are expected to intensify further. A Red Flag Warning is in effect, indicating that fire conditions are critical and will likely lead to increased fire behavior in the coming days, especially towards the communities of Cobalt, Blackbird, and Salmon.
