Wildfire Status:

As of September 18, 2024, the Elkhorn Ridge Fire, located in the West Fork Ranger District of Idaho's Frank Church Wilderness, has reached a size of approximately 3,125 acres. Recent precipitation and cooler temperatures have significantly slowed the fire's perimeter growth, which is currently exhibiting minimal activity with only interior smoldering observed. Firefighters have successfully implemented point protection strategies around valuable structures, and many are beginning to demobilize their equipment as the immediate threat to surrounding areas has diminished.

The Elkhorn Ridge Fire is accompanied by the Prospect Fire, which is currently estimated at 2,934 acres. Both fires, ignited by lightning, have been closely monitored, and firefighters have effectively managed the situation to prevent any significant expansion or threat to nearby structures. The safety measures taken, including securing cabins along the Salmon River, have proved successful, allowing for a controlled response to the fire's activity.
