Wildfire Status:

The Elkhorn Fire in McCall, Idaho, has burned approximately 26,048 acres and is currently 88% contained. As of August 25, 2023, minimal smoldering fire activity has been detected, largely due to recent precipitation which has helped suppress growth and limit fire activity. However, there is potential for increased fire activity in the remote wilderness areas as warmer and drier weather is anticipated early next week. Firefighters continue to monitor the situation, as heat may persist in the heavy dead and down vegetation on the forest floor until significant rainfall or snow occurs.

Fire response efforts are ongoing, with structure defense equipment previously positioned in the Salmon River canyon being removed. Firefighters and heavy equipment are focusing on suppression repair activities, which include work on mechanical lines, handlines, and roads. Boaters and campers in the vicinity are advised to exercise caution due to altered landscapes and potential hazards such as falling debris. While some recreational activities are permitted, there are restrictions in certain areas along the river.

The U.S. Forest Service has rescinded the closure order for the Elkhorn Fire area, allowing for greater access while still urging safety. Additionally, a Temporary Flight Restriction around the fire perimeter will be lifted at 9:00 p.m. on the same day. The incident command is set to transition from the National Incident Management Organization Team 4 to a local Type 4 organization on August 26. This will mark the final update unless significant changes occur, with further fire information available through the Payette National Forest Fire Information Hotline and other official channels.
