Wildfire Status:
The Magruder Ridge Fire, currently active in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness, has expanded to approximately 3,586 acres as of September 12, 2024. Recent rain has aided firefighting efforts, significantly reducing fire activity. Prior to the precipitation, the fire was particularly active near the Magruder Ridge trailhead and east of the Magruder Corridor Road, where it was backing downslope to the north. Firefighters have been monitoring conditions closely and will continue to update the public on any changes.
In response to the fire, the West Fork Ranger District has implemented several safety measures, including the temporary closure of sections of the Magruder Corridor Road (Forest Service Road #468) from Magruder Crossing to Observation Point, which took effect on September 6. This closure is intended to protect public health and safety amid ongoing fire activities. Firefighters are actively working to protect infrastructure in the area, utilizing pumps and sprinklers at strategic points like Kim Creek Saddle and Magruder Crossing Campground.
Weather conditions have played a crucial role in the fire's behavior, with recent rainfall contributing to a decline in fire activity. However, as the situation remains dynamic, road closures and fire behavior will be reassessed regularly. The public is encouraged to stay informed and plan travel accordingly, as delays and access restrictions may occur based on fire conditions. For the latest updates, travelers can contact the West Fork Ranger District.
