Wildfire Status:

The Red Rock Fire, detected on September 2, 2024, is currently active near the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District, approximately two miles east of the Yellowjacket Guard Station. As of the latest update, the fire has burned approximately 3,055 acres and is only 7% contained. The area is primarily forested with Douglas fir and lodgepole pine, which are contributing to the fire's intensity.

Firefighting efforts are being coordinated by the California Interagency Incident Management Team 4, led by Incident Commander Rocky Opliger. Currently, there are 348 personnel engaged in firefighting operations. Crews have made progress on the eastern flank of the fire, and mop-up operations are underway in various sectors. The estimated containment date for the fire is set for October 31, 2024, as additional resources continue to be allocated to manage the situation effectively.

Weather conditions have played a critical role in the firefighting efforts. Recent favorable weather, including wetting rain and cooler temperatures, has aided crews in their containment efforts. Firefighters are taking advantage of these conditions to establish control lines and conduct mop-up operations. However, the terrain and fuel types, which include a mix of grass, brush, and timber, pose ongoing challenges. The situation remains dynamic, with continuous assessments being made to adapt to changing conditions.
