Snag Fire (IDBOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Snag Fire, currently located approximately 9.5 miles east of Cascade, Idaho, has burned a total of 33,437 acres and is now 90% contained. The fire, which originated from a lightning strike on August 5, 2024, has experienced minimal growth in recent days, primarily exhibiting creeping and smoldering behavior without any intense heat near the perimeter. Fire agencies have transferred command of the incident back to the Boise National Forest, and the local Type 3 Incident Management Team is now responsible for monitoring and managing the remaining hotspots, particularly on the northern perimeter.

Current firefighting efforts include ongoing suppression repair, which is nearing completion with dozer and hand lines fully restored. Although only two personnel are actively involved in managing the fire at this stage, they are prepared to implement direct attack strategies if necessary to protect containment lines. The estimated date for full containment is projected for October 15, 2024.

Weather conditions have been favorable for firefighting efforts, with temperatures in the low to mid-70s and humidity levels in the low 20s. Winds have been relatively calm, with occasional gusts up to 10 mph. However, as temperatures are expected to drop to around 70 degrees and humidity levels rise to the upper teens, southwest winds may increase, gusting between 15-20 mph later in the day. Rain is anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday, with over a 90% chance of wetting precipitation, which should further aid in containment efforts.
