Wildfire Status:
The Snag Fire, part of the West Mountain Fires in Idaho, is currently affecting approximately 33,300 acres and is reported to be 27% contained. The fire is located about 11 miles east of Cascade and was ignited by lightning on August 5, 2024. It is being managed by the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team Three, led by Incident Commander Bill Waln. Alongside the Snag Fire, the Goat Fire and Dollar Fire are also active in the area, with the Goat Fire being particularly concerning as it remains 0% contained.
Fire agencies are actively responding to the Snag Fire with a significant presence of over 695 personnel on site. They are employing various firefighting strategies to contain the fire, which includes creating fire breaks and utilizing aerial support where necessary. In addition, the Boise National Forest, Idaho Department of Lands, and Bureau of Land Management have implemented Stage 1 fire restrictions across state and federal lands in the region to help mitigate further fire risks.
Current weather conditions are critical as the area is experiencing dry and hot weather, which increases the potential for fire spread. Firefighters are also contending with variable winds that can shift unexpectedly, complicating containment efforts. Residents in the vicinity are encouraged to stay informed about evacuation orders and road closures by following local authorities, such as the Valley County Sheriff's Office. For additional safety, it is advisable to consult resources like the Ready, Set, GO evacuation system to prepare for any necessary evacuations.
