Lava Fire (IDBOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Lava Fire, located on the Boise and Payette National Forests approximately 12 miles southwest of Cascade, Idaho, has burned an area of 97,844 acres since it was ignited by lightning on September 2, 2024. Currently, the fire is 57% contained, with 779 personnel actively engaged in firefighting efforts. The Lava Fire merged with the Boulder Fire on September 9, and combined information is being managed for both incidents. The fire is primarily affecting tall grass, brush, and timber, with significant dead and down fuels contributing to its behavior.

Fire response teams have faced challenges due to recent weather conditions, which included 1 to 3 inches of rain over the past 48 hours, leading to minimal, creeping, and smoldering fire activity. A community meeting is scheduled to address the ongoing situation and provide updates to local residents. Planned actions for fire containment include continuing to build direct lines in key divisions and assessing alternative contingency line locations when weather permits.

Current weather conditions show a warming trend with highs in the 60s Fahrenheit and relative humidity expected to drop into the 50s. Light winds from the west are anticipated, which could facilitate fire activity as the area dries out. The forecast indicates minimal cloud cover and fair weather throughout the day, which may allow remaining areas of heat to become visible and potentially lead to new ignitions from recent lightning strikes.
