Lava Fire (IDBOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Lava Fire, which ignited on September 2, 2024, due to lightning, is currently burning in the Boise and Payette National Forests, as well as lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Idaho Department of Lands. As of the latest update, the fire has consumed approximately 97,585 acres and is reported to be 94% contained. Command of the incident has transitioned back to the Boise National Forest, with no further updates provided on the previous incident management page. The Lava Fire merged with the Boulder Fire on September 9, creating a larger complex that has required coordinated firefighting efforts.

Currently, 189 personnel are engaged in suppression and monitoring efforts, focusing on securing the fire perimeter and conducting suppression repairs. Fire behavior has been described as minimal, with the fire primarily smoldering and creeping in areas of heavy fuel concentration. Weather conditions are expected to moderate fire behavior, with a significant change in the weather pattern bringing cooler temperatures and some precipitation, which should help minimize further spread.

In terms of current weather, temperatures are warming slightly, with lows projected in the low to mid-30s. Windy conditions are anticipated, along with a slight chance of light rain as a low-pressure system moves through the area. While significant wetting rain is not expected, the cooler weather will assist in controlling the fire's activity. Over the next few days, weather is projected to remain cool and dry, which should continue to support firefighting efforts and help stabilize the situation. Additionally, there is a potential for more significant precipitation from an approaching cold front later in the week, which could provide further relief.
