Lava Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Lava Fire, currently active in the Boise and Payette National Forests, has now burned approximately 97,585 acres and is reported to be 94% contained. The fire, which originated from a lightning strike on September 2, 2024, has been primarily burning through tall grass, brush, and timber. Since the fire's start, it has merged with the Boulder Fire on September 9, creating a more extensive incident that has drawn significant firefighting resources.
As of now, command of the Lava Fire has transitioned back to local fire management officials from the Boise National Forest after being managed by an Incident Management Team. Approximately 189 personnel are currently engaged in firefighting efforts, focusing on mop-up operations, securing the perimeter, and conducting suppression repair activities. The fire's behavior is currently minimal, with creeping and smoldering reported in areas with heavier fuel concentrations. The expected containment date is October 27, 2024.
Weather conditions are playing a crucial role in the firefighting efforts. A shift in weather is anticipated, with cooler temperatures and a slight chance of light rain due to a passing low-pressure system. Over the next few days, temperatures are expected to range from the low to mid-50s, with relative humidity levels between 35% and 55%. Although there is a potential for significant rain later in the week, the certainty of this forecast is low. Overall, the current weather is conducive to maintaining the fire's footprint without significant growth, thanks to the cooler conditions and moisture levels.
