Wapiti Fire (IDBOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Wapiti Fire, which ignited from a lightning strike on July 24, 2024, is currently burning in the Boise National Forest, approximately 2 miles southwest of Grandjean, Idaho. As of now, the fire has affected approximately 90% of its perimeter and continues to be a significant challenge for firefighting teams due to the steep terrain and difficult access. The fire has prompted the involvement of multiple incident management teams, with ongoing command transitions among different teams to effectively manage the complex situation.

Firefighting efforts have included a coordinated response from various local and regional teams. Initially managed by the Boise National Forest, command shifted to the Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 7 shortly after the fire's ignition, followed by several other teams over the subsequent weeks. The latest command is under the Sawtooth Type 3 Team as of October 8, 2024. Agencies are actively engaged in suppression efforts, while also monitoring the fire's behavior in response to changing weather conditions.

Weather conditions have posed challenges for firefighting operations, with factors such as wind and humidity affecting fire spread. Crews are working diligently to mitigate risks posed by the fire, including the potential for hazardous trees and debris slides in affected areas. Although recent reports indicate that some road and trail closures due to the fire have been rescinded, the public is advised to exercise caution when entering the fire-scarred landscapes, as remnants of the fire may still pose dangers.
