Wapiti Fire (IDBOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Wapiti Fire, ignited by lightning on July 24, 2024, is currently active in the Boise National Forest, approximately two miles southwest of Grandjean, Idaho. The challenging topography and adverse weather conditions have made firefighting efforts difficult, with approximately 90% of the fire's perimeter being managed. The fire has affected areas within the Boise, Sawtooth, and Salmon-Challis National Forests, leading to multiple changes in command among various incident management teams, including the Great Basin Complex and the Northern Rockies Complex teams.

Fire agencies have been actively responding to the Wapiti Fire since its inception, with command shifting several times to optimize resources and management strategies. The Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 7 initially took command, followed by Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5, and several others throughout the subsequent weeks. Most recently, the Sawtooth Type 3 team assumed control. These coordinated efforts highlight the complexity and scale of the fire response, involving multiple teams to adapt to the evolving situation.

In terms of weather, conditions have been less than favorable for firefighting operations, contributing to the fire's persistence. Firefighters continue to face steep terrain and limited access, hampering their ability to fully contain the blaze. As firefighting efforts continue, public safety remains a priority, with the National Forests issuing closure orders to protect both the firefighters and the public from potential hazards associated with active fire zones.
