Wildfire Status:
The Flat Fire, located approximately one mile northeast of Pioneerville in Boise County, Idaho, has been active since August 5, ignited by a thunderstorm. As of August 26, the fire has reached a size of 3,734 acres, with 61% of its perimeter contained. Firefighting efforts are being led by the Idaho Department of Lands, which took over management from the Boise National Forest on August 8. Fortunately, no structures are currently threatened, and the fire is progressing eastward, away from the community.
In response to the fire, a full suppression strategy has been employed. The personnel actively fighting the fire numbers about 198, and as fire behavior has diminished, the management will transition to a Type 4 organization on August 27. This organization will continue to monitor the perimeter and address any hot spots as necessary, particularly along the eastern flank near the Pioneer Fire burn scar. Minimal fire activity has been reported, with the fire exhibiting smoldering and isolated creeping behavior within its interior.
Weather conditions are expected to shift in the coming days as an upper-level system moves across southern Canada, bringing a cold front to the Pacific Northwest. This will result in drier and windier weather, which may elevate fire weather conditions. Despite these changes, it is anticipated that there will be minimal movement of the fire, and planned actions include continued patrolling and mop-up operations to secure the fire's edge. The estimated containment date is projected for September 15, 2024.
