Wapiti Fire (IDBOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Wapiti Fire, which ignited from lightning on July 24, 2024, is currently under the management of the Sawtooth Type 3 Team. The fire is located approximately 2 miles southwest of Grandjean, Idaho, within the Boise National Forest, as well as extending into the Sawtooth and Salmon-Challis National Forests. As of now, 90% of the fire's perimeter has been contained. Firefighters have faced significant challenges due to the steep terrain, difficult access, and unfavorable weather conditions, which have made firefighting efforts more complicated.

In response to the fire, several incident management teams have taken command at various points since the fire's outbreak. Initially managed by the Boise National Forest, the command shifted among multiple teams throughout August and into October. The most recent updates indicate that the Sawtooth Type 3 Team is currently overseeing operations.
