Wildfire Status:
The Wood Fire, located approximately 5 miles south of Superior, Arizona, remains an active wildfire within the Globe Ranger District, currently encompassing an area of 7,211 acres. The fire originated from natural lightning strikes on September 1, 2024, and has merged with the Wood 2 fire, now collectively referred to as the Wood Fire. As of the latest reports, the fire is progressing primarily to the east and is burning under moderate conditions, largely due to the rugged terrain and the ecological impacts from the previous Telegraph Fire in 2021. Firefighters are actively working to minimize the fire's impact on infrastructure and surrounding landscapes while monitoring the fire's behavior.
Currently, the fire is approximately 45% contained, with a total of nine personnel assigned to the incident. Despite the challenges posed by the terrain, which hampers direct access for firefighting efforts, air resources are being utilized to monitor for any new heat sources. Fire behavior has been reported as low to moderate, with the fire largely remaining within the footprint of the previous Telegraph Fire, which has significantly altered the ecology of the area. The occurrence of invasive grass species has contributed to an increased fire frequency in the region, making this situation particularly concerning for local communities.
Weather conditions are currently favorable for firefighting efforts, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s and higher relative humidity observed in the area. However, no significant rainfall is forecasted for the next ten days, which could impact containment efforts. Fire management teams are focusing on protecting critical assets such as private properties, power lines, and gas infrastructure, while also encouraging the public to stay informed about potential evacuation orders through Arizona's Ready, Set, Go emergency notification system. Fire agencies are committed to ongoing monitoring and will provide updates should significant fire activity occur.
