Wildfire Status:
The Wood Fire, located approximately 5 miles south of Superior, Arizona, remains active and is currently progressing primarily to the east in the Globe Ranger District. As of September 4, 2024, the fire has burned 7,211 acres and is reported to be 45% contained. The fire is burning under moderate conditions, characterized by lower temperatures, higher relative humidity, and scattered rain in the area. Firefighters are actively working to mitigate impacts to infrastructure and natural resources while monitoring the fire's behavior, which has exhibited low to moderate intensity primarily within the footprint of the previous Telegraph Fire in 2021.
The response to the Wood Fire includes a team of nine personnel managing the incident, which has transitioned to a Type 3 incident under the Globe Ranger District. Firefighters are focusing on protecting private property, power lines, and critical infrastructure along State Route 177. As the fire remains in rugged terrain, containment efforts may take longer due to the difficulty in accessing certain areas for direct engagement. Instead, aerial resources will be utilized to monitor any potential growth in remote locations.
Current weather conditions are relatively stable, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-90s and no rain forecasted for the next 10 days. The ongoing dry conditions combined with the ecological changes brought about by previous wildfires, such as the increase in invasive species, pose a risk for frequent fire incidents in the area. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about evacuation protocols through Arizona’s Ready, Set, Go emergency notification system, and to prepare defensible spaces around their properties to mitigate wildfire risks.
