Wildfire Status:
The Sand Stone Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, approximately 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills, Arizona, has reached a size of 27,390 acres and is currently 98% contained. The fire, caused by lightning, is situated in the Sonoran Desert and is primarily affecting areas filled with tall grass and brush. Due to several seasons of above-normal precipitation, the grass volume is higher than usual, but recent conditions have left these fuels quite dry. Firefighters are focused on protecting adjacent Tribal and private lands, as well as vital infrastructure and natural resources.
Currently, there are about 40 personnel actively engaged in managing the fire, with Type 4 incident commanders from the Cave Creek Ranger District overseeing operations. The situation has stabilized significantly, with minimal smoldering activity reported and no anticipated spread, thanks to recent precipitation that has reduced fire behavior. Planned actions include continued monitoring and suppression repairs, and the incident command was transferred to the Tonto National Forest on August 12.
Weather conditions have played a crucial role in the fire's current state, with elevated relative humidity reducing the availability of fuels to ignite and sustain fire spread. The outlook for the next several days indicates no expected movement beyond the existing fire footprint, allowing for a more controlled and monitored response. The incident remains under a closure order that restricts access to all National Forest System lands and trails in the vicinity to ensure safety and effective firefighting operations.
