Wildfire Status:

The Sand Stone Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, northeast of Fountain Hills, Arizona, is currently under control, with 98% of its perimeter contained. The fire has consumed approximately 27,390 acres of land in the Sonoran Desert, primarily fueled by tall grass and brush. Following several growing seasons marked by above-normal precipitation, the fuel volumes were significantly higher than usual; however, recent moisture and increased relative humidity have mitigated the fire's potential. Currently, only minimal smoldering remains, with no anticipated spread, as the fire has received measurable precipitation.

Fire agencies, including Type 4 incident commanders from the Cave Creek Ranger District, have made substantial progress in managing the fire. There are currently 40 personnel on-site to continue monitoring the situation, performing suppression repair, and preparing for any initial attacks as necessary. The command of the incident was transferred to the Tonto National Forest on August 12, 2024. An emergency closure order has been implemented in the Cave Creek and Mesa Ranger District to safeguard public health and safety, effective from July 29 through August 31, 2024.

Weather conditions have played a crucial role in the current status of the Sand Stone Fire. The combination of recent rains and elevated humidity levels has significantly reduced the availability of fuels to carry the fire. The forecast indicates no expected movement outside the existing fire footprint in the coming days, allowing firefighting efforts to focus on containment and recovery. The situation remains stable, with ongoing monitoring to ensure that the fire remains under control.
