Wildfire Status:

The Sand Stone Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, approximately 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills, Arizona, has burned an area of 27,390 acres within the Sonoran Desert. As of the latest reports, the fire is 98% contained, with minimal smoldering activity observed. The fire's growth has been curtailed thanks to recent precipitation, which has significantly reduced the availability of dry fuels like tall grass and brush that had accumulated due to previous above-normal precipitation. Fire management teams are focusing on protecting adjacent Tribal and private lands, as well as vital infrastructure and natural resources.

Current firefighting efforts involve a total of 40 personnel who are tasked with monitoring the situation and conducting suppression repair. Although the fire is largely contained, the command has been transferred to the Tonto National Forest, and plans are in place to continue monitoring the fire's perimeter and respond to any potential flare-ups. Over the next few days, no significant movement of the fire is anticipated, allowing resources to be allocated for repairs and ongoing preventive measures.

Weather conditions remain a concern, with temperatures expected to reach highs near 110°F in the coming week. However, the recent rainfall and elevated relative humidity levels have mitigated immediate threats of fire spread. The area around the fire has seen closures, including all National Forest System lands, roads, and trails within a specified boundary, to ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting operations.
