Paramount Fire (NMGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Paramount Fire, reported on July 12, 2024, is currently located along the north side of New Mexico Highway 59, approximately 19 miles west of Winston, New Mexico. The fire has burned a total of 1,335 acres and is now fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured. The incident is being managed using a confine and contain strategy, allowing the fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem while minimizing risks to firefighters. The area includes accessible terrain and established road networks, specifically utilizing Forest Roads 4070U and 4066Z for containment efforts.

Currently, five personnel are assigned to the incident, under the command of Wade Grisenti, with James White as a trainee. Firing actions have been completed, and all containment lines are secure. The fire is primarily burning in grass and brush within a mixed forest of ponderosa pine, oak, and pinyon-juniper, and is noted to be smoldering in heavy dead and down material within the interior of its perimeter. Monitoring of fire behavior and activity remains a priority, with planned actions focused on holding the fire at its containment features.

Weather conditions are becoming a significant factor in the firefighting efforts, with monsoonal moisture and daily thunderstorms predicted over the next week. These conditions may impact fire behavior and necessitate ongoing monitoring. The estimated containment date for the fire is set for July 25, 2024, as crews continue to ensure the fire remains within established boundaries.
