Wildfire Status:
As of July 9, 2025, the Trout Fire, which has been burning in the Gila National Forest approximately 12 miles north of Silver City, has grown to an area of 47,294 acres. The fire, reported on June 12, was likely ignited by lightning and has been driven by hot and dry weather conditions. Currently, 96% of the fire's perimeter is contained, indicating significant progress in managing the situation.
The Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team has been overseeing firefighting operations and will hand over command to the Gila National Forest at 6:00 p.m. today. This transition comes after the team took control of the fire management from the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 4 on June 30. The ongoing response includes coordinated efforts to suppress the fire and protect nearby communities and infrastructure.
Weather conditions continue to be a critical factor in firefighting efforts. The region is experiencing high temperatures and dry winds which can exacerbate fire behavior. Fire agencies remain vigilant, monitoring the situation closely as they prepare for any potential changes in conditions that could affect containment efforts.
