Foote Fire (AZASF)

Wildfire Status:

The Foote Fire, which ignited on June 14, 2024, due to a lightning strike, is currently active and has burned approximately 4,553 acres in the remote terrain of the Blue Range Primitive Area, located about 12 miles south of Alpine, Arizona. The fire continues to consume dead and down fuels with low to moderate intensity, and fire growth has been moderate, with spread occurring overnight to the northwest and southeast. Fire managers have noted that there may be occasional torching and small fire runs as the fire encounters pockets of heavier fuel loading. As of now, no containment has been achieved.

The response to the Foote Fire involves a total of 124 personnel who are actively engaged in monitoring and managing the situation. The incident is commanded by Nate Nozie, a Type 3 Incident Commander from the USDA Forest Service. Fire behavior remains active, characterized by uphill runs, backing, and creeping across the varied terrain. Currently, fire managers are assessing Highway 191 for potential burnout operations to mitigate the spread of the fire.

Weather conditions pose additional challenges, with concerns about potential thunderstorms and outflow winds that could impact fire behavior. As the forecast suggests continued movement of the fire in all directions, the firefighting efforts will need to remain vigilant and adaptable to changing conditions in order to effectively manage this wildfire and protect the surrounding areas.
