Ridge Fire (NMGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Ridge Fire, which began on July 4, 2024, in the Gila Wilderness approximately 19 miles east of Glenwood, New Mexico, is currently classified as an active wildfire. As of the latest updates, the fire has burned approximately 4,257 acres, with crews focused on confining and containing it within the Iron Creek Mesa area. The fire was lightning-caused and is being managed with the intent to protect adjacent private lands, cultural and natural resources, and various ecosystems. The natural role of fire in this wilderness area is recognized, as it aids in reducing hazardous fuels and promoting ecological health.

Firefighting efforts have involved 281 personnel who are actively working on the ground to suppress the fire's spread. As of the latest reports, the fire is 23% contained. Weather conditions have been somewhat favorable recently, with precipitation helping to cool fire activity. This shift in weather has provided some relief, allowing for better management of the situation. However, certain areas remain under emergency temporary closure orders, specifically affecting trails and trail segments #141, #151, #157, and #171 to ensure the safety of firefighters and the public.
