Ridge Fire (NMGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Ridge Fire, located approximately 19 miles east of Glenwood, New Mexico, has been active since July 4, 2024, following a lightning strike. The fire currently spans an area of 4,257 acres, with 85% of its perimeter being contained. Fire crews are focused on confining and containing the blaze within the Iron Creek Mesa area, while also addressing the protection of adjacent private lands, cultural and natural resources, and watersheds. The fire plays a significant role in the ecosystem by reducing hazardous fuels and promoting the growth of native forages, ultimately enhancing species diversity and wildlife habitat.

Firefighting efforts have been bolstered by recent precipitation, which has helped to cool fire activity. As of the latest updates, containment efforts have reached approximately 23%. The Gila National Forest has implemented a temporary closure of several trails to protect both firefighters and the public during ongoing suppression activities. A total of 281 personnel are currently engaged in combating the fire, utilizing various strategies to manage the incident effectively.

Weather conditions have been favorable with rain contributing to the reduction of fire intensity, but the area still faces challenges typical of wildfire incidents, including the potential for changing wind patterns. Fire agencies are closely monitoring these conditions as they continue to implement their tactical approach to managing the Ridge Fire, while keeping safety as a priority for both the public and firefighting crews.
