Wildfire Status:
The Town Gulch Fire, which ignited due to lightning on August 5, 2024, has grown to an area of 18,220 acres, with 89% of its perimeter currently contained. This wildfire is located along Eagle Creek, approximately eight miles north-northwest of Richland, Oregon. Firefighters are facing challenges posed by steep terrain and winding canyon roads, which complicate access and operations. The incident is being managed as a full suppression effort, prioritizing the safety of firefighters, the public, and the protection of structures and community assets.
As of now, there are 285 personnel actively responding to the fire. A slight decrease in acreage has been reported, attributed to improved mapping techniques. Firefighting efforts include ongoing mop-up and patrol activities across all divisions, as well as suppression and repair work. Significant events noted in the fire's activity include moderate flanking and smoldering, with interior pockets continuing to burn.
Weather conditions pose a critical factor in the wildfire's management. Following a period of light rain, temperatures are expected to rise significantly, reaching between 85 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit over the next few days, with relative humidity dropping to 9-15%. Strong winds from the south-southwest are anticipated, particularly peaking again on Monday. This combination of heat, low humidity, and winds raises concerns for potential fire spread, and fire agencies remain vigilant as they monitor these changing conditions.
