Lolo Fire (NMGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Lolo Fire, which ignited on July 5, 2024, in the Quemado Ranger District near Escondido Mountain, has covered approximately 438 acres. Initially, the fire escaped suppression efforts and moved into steep, inaccessible terrain that has not burned in recorded history. The area is characterized by heavy dead and down fuels, leading to challenges in direct firefighting methods. Current containment efforts utilize indirect tactics, where crews are working to confine the fire using existing roads, trails, and natural features.

As of the latest reports, the fire is 100% contained, and there has been minimal fire activity observed, with no visible smoke since July 19. The firefighting team currently consists of five personnel, who are monitoring the interior heat of the fire. Recent weather conditions have significantly aided in containment, with over an inch of rain received in the area and a forecast of daily chances for showers and thunderstorms, estimated at 70% for the upcoming week.

Moving forward, fire management strategies will prioritize the safety of firefighters and the public while considering the protection of private land and historic features. The current outlook indicates that the fire is smoldering with no signs of movement, and crews will continue to monitor the situation until all heat sources are extinguished.
