Lolo Fire (NMGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Lolo Fire, which was first reported on July 5, 2024, is currently active in the Quemado Ranger District near Escondido Mountain, New Mexico. The fire has spread across 438 acres and was initially difficult to suppress due to its location in steep, inaccessible terrain, which had not experienced fire in recorded history. The area is characterized by heavy dead and down fuels, necessitating the use of indirect tactics by fire crews. These tactics include utilizing existing roads, trails, and natural features to confine and contain the fire.

As of July 29, 2024, the fire is reported to be 100% contained, with minimal active behavior observed. Fire management teams have noted that significant rainfall has occurred in the area, contributing to reduced fire activity and no visible smoke since July 19. Currently, a small team of five personnel is monitoring the situation, focusing on internal heat until the fire is completely extinguished.

Weather conditions are favorable for containment efforts, with a 70% chance of daily showers and thunderstorms forecasted for the upcoming week. Recent rains have exceeded one inch, which has greatly aided in suppressing the fire. The ongoing management strategy prioritizes firefighter safety, public safety, and the protection of private lands and historic features, with decisions being made to minimize risks while ensuring effective monitoring of any remaining heat sources within the fire perimeter.
