Latest update
The Little Giant Fire, started by lightning on July 15, is located 41 miles NW of Leavenworth, WA. It is in the Chiwawa River drainage on the Wenatchee River Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. It was originally estimated at 5 acres. Rappelers were dispatched for initial attack, and a 21-person initial attack crew arrived on July 17. Minimal aerial support was available to support firefighters on the ground.
Due to winds and increased fire behavior, as well as poor access in steep, inaccessible country, all firefighters disengaged and hiked out on July 18. Currently, a 20-person crew is working to brush the Chiwawa River Rd, FS 6200 and is available to assist with tactics to suppress the fire as it is safe for firefighters. The fire is currently estimated at 245 acres, as of July 20th.
