Ferris Fire is the 2nd-largest active wildfire in Colorado, burning 12 miles northwest of Dolores.
Latest update
Fire behavior was extreme throughout the night on the Ferris and Far Draw Fires. The Far Draw merged into the Ferris Fire; it will now be referred to as the Ferris Fire. It crossed Forest Roads 514 and 493. Night operations focused on structure protection and scouting the fire area to identify additional values at risk and containment opportunities. The three fires, which are in very close proximity to each other, are being managed as the "Ferris Fire" by San Juan Team 8.
Firefighters will utilize a values-based strategy to protect values at risk, including private lands and structures to the south and northeast of the fire front. Today, they will work to establish a safe anchor point. Natural barriers will be used to contain the fire’s spread and aggressive suppression actions will be taken at opportune times. The likelihood of direct attack is low again today, however, given the hazardous conditions.
Evacuations remain in place as a precautionary measure. For evacuation information, please visit the county website.
Fire behavior is expected to be extreme again today. A Red Flag warning for sustained high, erratic winds and gusts up to 55 mph is in place.
