Latest update
The Mill Creek 2 Fire is located approximately 12 miles northeast of Pagosa Springs on the San Juan National Forest in high, remote terrain, near the border of the South San Juan Wilderness Area. The fire initially burned aggressively through a heavy load of mixed conifer and dead and down logs. The fire has continued to creep through grasses and other ground fuels, burning through isolated pockets of wood. Rain and snow during Thanksgiving week have dampened fire behavior. Interior pockets of vegetation continue to smolder and burn out, but no significant fire activity is expected. A second round of moisture is anticipated over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Because of the extremely difficult access and safety risks, firefighters have not been sent in to directly engage this fire. No homes, ranches or private holdings are at risk.
No closures are in place because of this fire.
