Wildfire Status:

The Orleans Complex, which includes the Butler Fire and the Red Fire, is currently active in northern California. The Butler Fire, reported on July 3, 2025, has burned approximately 3,971 acres and is located northeast of Orleans, near Butler Mountain. This fire is situated in steep and rugged terrain characterized by heavy brush and snag fuel loads, complicating firefighting efforts. Approximately 20 structures are threatened, particularly in the Butler Flat and Lewis Creek communities. Firefighters are actively working to protect these values at risk along the Salmon River Road.

In response to these fires, the North Coast Interagency Incident Management Team has taken command of the Red Fire, which was reported on July 6 and has reached an estimated size of 113 acres with 25% containment. Fire crews, including smokejumpers, are employing direct and full suppression tactics to minimize the fire's impact, particularly in the Siskiyou Wilderness Area where it is located. Fortunately, there are no structures currently threatened by the Red Fire, and no evacuations have been mandated for that area.

Evacuations have been issued for certain zones surrounding the Butler Fire, including areas with residents such as Butler Creek, Lewis Creek, and Bloomer Mine. There are also warnings issued for additional zones. Campgrounds such as Nordheimer and Oak Bottom have been closed due to fire activity and suppression efforts. The situation remains dynamic as weather conditions and fire behavior can change rapidly, necessitating ongoing monitoring and response from fire agencies to ensure safety for both firefighters and the public.
