Klamath NF Lightning Fires Evening Update for August 31, 2025
Two new lightning holdover fires were detected on the Klamath National Forest yesterday: the ten-acre Chopper Fire, one mile northwest of the Gottville river access; and the 1/10th-acre China Fire near China Gulch Trailhead on the far south end of the Salmon-Scott River Ranger District. The Chopper has containment line around it and fire crews continue to mop up and strengthen containment lines. The China Fire is contained.
The China and the Chopper bring the total number of lightning fires on the forest from the recent thunderstorms to 36. Of these, four remain uncontained – the Chopper, Garden, Log, and Blue fires.
The Garden Fire is 50% contained with no reportable growth today is 14 acres. This fire is four miles northwest of Sawyers Bar and seven miles northeast of Forks of Salmon, on the south side of Yellowjacket Ridge. Crews remain committed to the Garden Fire, which is burning in an area of snags on very steep terrain.
The 200-acre Log Fire is in the Marble Mountain Wilderness, two miles northwest of English Peak. It is burning in a fir-dominated stand of timber with areas of brush and rock in remote and rugged terrain. The challenging conditions have hampered containment efforts.
The Blue Fire has been transferred to Complex Interagency Incident Management Team 1, who is also in command of the Dillon Fire on the Six Rivers National Forest.
This will be the final update for the fires from the most recent round of lightning, unless significant activity occurs.
The Klamath National Forest wants to remind visitors that fire restrictions are in effect. This means that campfires are only permitted in designated recreation areas and wilderness. Other activities that could spark a wildfire are restricted as part of this forest order. Please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/klamath/alerts/fire-restrictions to view the list of designated recreation areas and the complete list of restricted activities before visiting the Forest.
