The Butler Fire is northeast of Orleans near Butler Mountain within the 2024 Boise Fire, the 2020 Salmon Fire, and the 2013 Butler Fire footprints. The fire was reported in the evening of July 3, 2025, from a lightning storm that passed through earlier in the week. The remote, steep slopes and rugged ridgelines, combined with heavy brush and snag fuel loads, made for challenging conditions for firefighter safety as well as access to the fire.
The Red Fire, reported in the evening of July 6, is in heavy timber and dense vegetation near the Siskiyou Wilderness. Smoke jumpers and crews used direct and full suppression tactics to minimize the footprint of this fire. The fire is located approximately 1.5 miles north of Nickowitz Peak, 17 miles northwest of Orleans, and 15 miles southeast of Klamath.
The Big Cliff Fire was discovered in the early morning of July 31st after a thunderstorm. It is approximately three miles southeast of the Idlewild Campground, and the Orleans Complexed assumed command. Several crews shifted over from the Butler Fire to conduct initial attack operations, and additional hotshot resources were ordered. Air resources, both fixed-wing and helicopters, were quickly utilized to support crews on the ground working in steep difficult terrain.
