Wildfire Status:
The Butler Fire, currently burning on the Six Rivers National Forest in California, has spread to approximately 1,346 acres since it was reported on the evening of July 3, 2025. The fire ignited due to a lightning storm that affected the area earlier that week, and it is situated in steep, rugged terrain filled with heavy brush and snag fuel loads. The challenging landscape has made access difficult, complicating firefighting efforts. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to create ground access by cutting trails through fallen trees and dense underbrush, while aerial resources have been deployed to monitor the fire and conduct water drops to help control its spread.
Fire response teams are focusing on protecting nearby communities along Salmon River Road, including Butler Flat and Lewis Creek, where approximately 20 structures are currently threatened. The North Coast Type 3 Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Bryan Lanning, has taken command of the situation and is implementing a full suppression strategy that prioritizes the safety of both firefighters and the public. To manage the risk, an evacuation order has been issued for certain areas, and warnings are in place for others, indicating heightened alert for potential evacuations.
Weather conditions at the fire site are typically hot and dry, which can exacerbate fire behavior. Firefighters are continuing their efforts to establish control lines and mitigate hotspots, with ongoing support from helicopter units. As of now, there are no planned road closures on Salmon River Road, but residents and visitors may experience delays due to fire suppression activities. Additionally, Nordheimer and Oak Bottom Campgrounds have been closed as a precautionary measure. The situation remains dynamic, and firefighting efforts will continue as conditions evolve.
