Hill Fire (CASRF)

Wildfire Status:

The Hill Fire, which ignited on July 15, 2024, is currently located approximately 11 miles south of Willow Creek in Humboldt County, California. After several days of active burning, the fire has been reported as 100% contained as of August 15, 2024. It has burned through 7,224 acres of steep, challenging terrain characterized by heavy timber and dry vegetation. Fortunately, all evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted, allowing residents to return to their homes.

Fire behavior has moderated significantly in recent days, primarily driven by favorable weather conditions. The lower elevations are dominated by mixed hardwood-conifer timber, while the upper elevations consist mainly of light brush and litter beneath a conifer overstory. The fire's northern perimeter intersected with the footprint of the 2022 Ammon Fire, where previous burns have resulted in reduced fuel loads and, consequently, decreased fire activity. Early in its development, the Hill Fire prompted rapid growth, which led to the activation of substantial air resources and evacuations in the surrounding area.

The response to the Hill Fire involved two incident management teams, including one federal and one CAL FIRE team, due to its presence on both state and federal lands. As of the containment date, the management of the incident has transitioned to local personnel from the Lower Trinity Ranger District. Approximately 100 personnel remain assigned to the site, focusing on mop-up operations and repairs to suppression lines. The outlook for the fire indicates minimal activity, with current fire behavior characterized by smoldering and creeping.
