Hill Fire (CASRF)

Wildfire Status:

The Hill Fire, which ignited on July 15, 2024, is located approximately 11 miles south of Willow Creek in the Mosquito Creek Drainage. Currently, the fire has burned a total of 7,224 acres. As of August 15, 2024, the fire is fully contained, with a reported 100% containment status. The fire's behavior has significantly moderated, primarily influenced by weather conditions, with the lower elevations exhibiting mixed hardwood-conifer timber and the upper elevations characterized by light brush and conifer litter. Early in its progression, the fire expanded rapidly, necessitating evacuations and the deployment of substantial air resources.

In terms of response, two incident management teams—one from CAL FIRE and another federal team—were deployed to manage the suppression efforts due to the fire's location on both state and federal lands. Currently, 154 personnel are engaged in mopping up operations to eliminate heat near control lines and to further secure the perimeter against potential hot spots. The operational focus includes backhauling excess supplies, addressing hazard trees, and coordinating repairs in line with the suppression repair plan.

Weather conditions have played a crucial role in the fire's behavior, and there are expectations that fire activity will remain low, primarily consisting of smoldering and backing fires. The fire is anticipated to stay within its current footprint, with only minor interior burning of heavy dead and down material. All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted, indicating a return to normalcy for the affected communities.
