Wildfire Status:

The Easy Fire, currently active in the Methow Valley Ranger District, is burning in dense timber approximately 17 air miles west of Mazama, Washington. The fire ignited on July 17, 2024, due to dry lightning storms and has since experienced explosive growth, characterized by running crown fire conditions. Despite initial difficulties due to extreme temperatures and dry conditions that hindered access to the fire, crews have made progress in managing the situation. As of now, the fire has reached an estimated size of 2,130 acres, with 36% of its perimeter contained.

Fire management strategies are being deployed to control the spread of the fire. Ground crews are establishing containment lines where feasible, while aerial resources are being utilized to cool hotspots. Natural features in the area are being leveraged to limit fire growth. Recent weather patterns have positively impacted the situation, as elevated fuel moisture content has led to a reduction in fire intensity. Observations indicate that the fire behavior has been minimal, with mostly smoldering and creeping observed, particularly in the heavily vegetated areas with downed logs that continue to retain heat.

Weather conditions remain a critical factor in ongoing fire management. Forecasts indicate fluctuations in weather patterns over the coming days, followed by a potential return to warmer and drier conditions later in the week. Firefighters are actively taking field weather measurements, which are shared with the incident meteorologist to refine local forecasts. The current outlook includes plans to patrol the fire area using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and implementing strategies to protect critical infrastructure along the Highway 20 corridor. Incident management will continue to closely monitor the fire to ensure that any remaining heat stays contained within the existing fire footprint.
