Bear Gulch Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Bear Gulch Fire, located in the Olympic National Forest near the Mt. Rose Trailhead along the Lake Cushman Corridor, has been actively burning since July 6, 2025. Currently, the fire has expanded to approximately 326 acres but poses no immediate threat to structures or nearby communities. Firefighters are focusing on public and firefighter safety, advising visitors to avoid the Lake Cushman/Staircase area while the situation is managed.
The response from fire agencies has been robust, with aviation resources, including scooper aircraft, utilizing water from Lake Cushman to mitigate the fire's spread effectively. Ground operations include four interagency engines working in accessible areas near FS-24, while a Type 3 Incident Management Team is set to take command of the situation later today. The steep and rocky terrain has made aerial firefighting the safest and most efficient method in this incident.
As of the latest updates, several recreation sites have been rendered inaccessible due to the fire, including the Staircase Area and Campground, Bear Gulch Day Use Area, and multiple trailheads in the vicinity. Firefighters are prioritizing the protection of life and property, and updates can be found on the Olympic National Forest website and social media channels.
