France Canyon (UTDIF)

Wildfire Status:

The France Canyon Fire, which ignited on June 11, 2025, is currently burning on the Powell Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest, approximately 6.5 miles southeast of Hatch, Utah. As of the latest updates, the fire has spread over an area of 34,943 acres and is 90% contained. Firefighting efforts have reduced the activity significantly, with crews reporting fewer heat sources and less active fire. However, some areas near popular recreation sites, such as Tropic Reservoir and Kings Creek Campground, still pose challenges, and suppression efforts are focused on these locations.

Fire management has transitioned through various teams, with the Color Country Incident Management Team initially managing the response until June 22, followed by the Great Basin Team 5. As of July 4, the Color Country Team Type 3 has resumed command. The current response involves 119 personnel who are engaged in mop-up operations, patrols, and suppression repair activities. Management objectives prioritize public safety, protection of private property, and safeguarding critical infrastructure and sensitive habitats.

Weather conditions have been relatively favorable, contributing to the reduction of fire activity. The predominant fuel types in the area include mixed conifer timber, litter, and understory materials, compounded by drought-stressed shrub species. Fire agencies remain cautious, implementing measures to monitor and control any residual heat, while also addressing any potential threats to nearby communities and natural resources, with closures in effect for the affected areas.
