Wildfire Status:
The Cliff Mountain Fire, which started on July 25, 2024, by lightning in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, has currently burned approximately 1,108 acres. The fire has transitioned back to the Wallowa Whitman National Forest as of August 16, 2024. It was previously two separate fires, the Muddy Fire and the Cliff Mountain Fire, which merged due to their proximity. Currently, 75% of the fire's perimeter is contained, and minimal fire behavior is expected, with no significant growth anticipated in the coming days.
Fire agencies are monitoring the situation closely, with no personnel actively engaged on the ground at this time. They have aircraft available for aerial evaluations of potential fire activity. Should any increase in fire behavior occur, prompt actions will be taken to mitigate impacts on identified values at risk. The fire is expected to remain within its current perimeter, exhibiting only smoldering behavior over the next several days.
Recent weather conditions have contributed to the current state of the fire. A low-pressure system brought some showers and thunderstorms earlier, resulting in minor rainfall. While temperatures rose to the upper 60s to near 80 degrees Fahrenheit, relative humidity has dropped to between 27% and 36%. Winds shifted from a northeast flow to a westerly-southwesterly direction in the afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph. The forecast suggests similar weather patterns for the upcoming days, with a possibility of additional showers and thunderstorms.
