Wildfire Status:

The Cliff Mountain Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, due to a lightning strike in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, is currently estimated to cover 1,108 acres. As of August 16, 2024, the fire has reached a containment level of 75%. The incident has transitioned back to the management of the Wallowa Whitman National Forest, and there are presently no personnel actively engaged in firefighting efforts, as the situation has stabilized. The fire previously consisted of two separate blazes, the Muddy Fire and the Cliff Mountain Fire, which merged into one. Fire growth is limited mainly due to the steep rocky terrain, which restricts its spread.

Recent weather conditions have been a factor in the fire's current state. A low-pressure system brought some showers and thunderstorms earlier today, contributing to a slight decrease in fire activity. With temperatures rising into the upper 60s to near 80 degrees Fahrenheit and relative humidity levels dropping to 27-36%, fire behavior remains minimal, with no significant growth expected in the immediate future. Winds shifted from northeast to west-southwest, reaching gusts of 20 mph, which could influence localized fire dynamics, but overall, the fire is anticipated to remain within its current perimeter.

Looking ahead, fire management plans include the use of aircraft to monitor for any potential fire activity. The outlook for the next few days indicates that the fire will likely continue to exhibit smoldering behavior without significant changes. The estimated containment date is projected for August 25, 2024, pending any unforeseen developments. Fire agencies remain vigilant, ready to respond if conditions warrant further action.
