Cliff Mountain (ORWWF)

Wildfire Status:

The Cliff Mountain Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, due to lightning in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, is currently active and has burned approximately 1,108 acres. As of August 16, 2024, the fire has transitioned back to the management of the Wallowa Whitman National Forest. The fire's growth is limited, primarily due to the steep rocky terrain which restricts its spread. Currently, about 75% of the fire perimeter is contained, and no significant growth is expected in the immediate future.

Fire agencies have reported no active personnel on-site, indicating a strategic approach to monitoring and managing the fire's behavior. Planned actions include the use of aircraft to evaluate potential fire activity, with a focus on minimizing impacts should any growth occur. The projected incident activity for the next several days suggests that the fire will remain within its current perimeter, characterized by smoldering behavior rather than active flames.

Weather conditions are currently variable, with a low-pressure system having passed through the area, resulting in some showers and thunderstorms earlier in the day. Temperatures have risen to the upper 60s to near 80°F, with relative humidity levels dropping to between 27-36%. Winds shifted from a downslope northeast flow to a westerly-southwesterly direction, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph. Further showers and thunderstorms are anticipated, although conditions are expected to stabilize into a cool and dry pattern for the following days. The combination of weather conditions and ongoing management strategies is aimed at preventing further fire spread in the region.
