Wildfire Status:

The Miller Peak Fire, located approximately 8 miles southeast of Missoula, Montana, was first reported on July 14, 2024. As of now, the fire has been fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured. The total area affected by the fire spans 2,724 acres, primarily involving timber and understory vegetation. Currently, there are eight personnel assigned to the incident, focusing on the aftermath and recovery efforts.

Fire suppression repair efforts have concluded, allowing forest officials to reopen most of the affected area to the public. However, significant erosion damage has occurred on a section of Forest Service Road 2132, known as Plant Creek Road, which remains impassable between mile markers 1.25 and 4.1 due to the impacts of a large rain event following the fire's high severity. This road closure is in place for public safety, and updated information regarding closures and maps can be found on the Lolo National Forest's official webpage.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but the incident has transitioned from an active wildfire response to recovery and monitoring phases. Given the recent weather conditions, which have included heavy rainfall, fire officials are assessing the landscape for potential hazards and ensuring the safety of the reopened areas.
