The Post Fire, which ignited on June 10, 2025, has been exhibiting rapid spread due to favorable weather and fuel conditions, atypical for this time of year. Currently, the fire has burned approximately 144 acres and is reported to be 94% contained. It is located in rugged terrain near Highway 12, between Lolo, Montana, and Kooskia, Idaho, where long evacuation times are a concern should an emergency arise. The fire poses potential threats to various forest infrastructure, recreation sites, and natural and cultural resources in the area.

Fire management has transitioned from the Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5, led by Incident Commander Joe Sampson, to a local Type 4 organization as of June 24. The current approach is a full suppression strategy, which focuses on confinement, containment, and point protection. Notably, there are no active fire restrictions, road closures, or area evacuations at this time. However, firefighting efforts continue with a dedicated team of 29 personnel, including multiple hotshot crews actively engaged in suppression activities.

Recent weather conditions have contributed to the fire's behavior, with smoldering observed in individual stumps and downed logs within the established perimeter. Firefighters are particularly vigilant due to the risk of roll-out in the steep terrain, which can complicate containment efforts. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as the response continues.
