Wildfire Status:
The Cracker Jack Complex, which consists of four separate wildfires—Square Lake Fire, Whistling Pig Fire, Fish Fire, and Fish 2 Fire—has been actively burning since August 10, 2024, after a lightning storm ignited the blazes in the Gospel-Hump Wilderness, located approximately two and a half miles east of Concord, Idaho. The fires have merged, covering a total area of about 5,240 acres. Currently, the fire's perimeter remains active, but very little precipitation has been received, contributing to the ongoing fire behavior.
Fire agencies are actively responding to the situation, with a local Type 4 Incident Commander overseeing approximately 65 personnel dedicated to managing the complex. Efforts are being made to monitor and control the flames, particularly as recent frost kill has affected fire behavior in the area. While FS Road #311 and FS Road #233 are still open, this could change if the fire intensity increases. Additionally, official National Forest Service Trail closures are now in effect, impacting several trail segments to ensure public safety.
As for weather conditions, temperatures are expected to rise into the low 80s this weekend, with a slight chance of rain showers projected. Starting Sunday and continuing into early next week, temperatures are anticipated to range from the mid-60s to mid-70s. These conditions may provide some relief to firefighting efforts, though the lack of significant rainfall thus far remains a concern.
