2024- Sheering Fire (CASTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Sheering Fire, which ignited on June 24, 2024, in the Stanislaus National Forest, is currently fully contained at 100%. The fire has burned approximately 528 acres between Duckwall and Bell Mountain near Cherry Lake and was fueled by an unusual lightning event. Firefighters were initially focused on two other fires in the area but were able to shift resources to the Sheering Fire, which has exhibited low to moderate intensity and a slow rate of spread since its inception. The fire is located within the footprint of the 2013 Rim Fire, characterized by excessive snags and hazard trees, which posed challenges for suppression efforts.

Currently, a Type 4 Incident Management Team is overseeing the fire response, ensuring that public and firefighter safety remains the highest priority. Fire management has employed a full suppression strategy, utilizing existing roads and natural barriers to establish containment lines. As of July 10, 2024, containment efforts have been focused on completing the southern boundary along Lost Creek, with ongoing mop-up operations being conducted by approximately 90 personnel on-site.

Weather conditions have played a vital role in fire management, with hot and dry conditions persisting. However, a gradual cool down is expected through the weekend. This change in weather is anticipated to aid in the ongoing suppression efforts. Despite the challenges posed by the terrain and fuel conditions, the fire team is optimistic about maintaining containment and is actively scouting for further indirect suppression options as necessary.
