2024- Sheering Fire (CASTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Sheering Fire, located between Duckwall and Bell Mountain near Cherry Lake, California, has been actively burning since June 24, 2024. The fire ignited as a result of an unusual lightning event that affected the area, also triggering two other fires in the Clavey River drainage. As of now, the Sheering Fire has burned 528 acres and is fully contained, with fire management indicating a low to moderate intensity and a slow rate of spread. This allows for a strategic response using existing roads and natural features for containment lines, which helps protect both firefighters and resources in the region.

Fire agencies have implemented a full suppression strategy, prioritizing the safety of the public and firefighters. The fire is situated within the footprint of the 2013 Rim Fire, which has resulted in hazardous conditions due to excessive snags and dead fuel. Despite these risks, the fire's behavior has remained manageable, characterized by minimal backing, creeping, and smoldering. Currently, there are 90 personnel assigned to the incident, and the estimated date for full containment is set for July 31, 2024. Fire managers are actively scouting options for indirect suppression where direct methods are not feasible.

Weather conditions are a significant factor in the ongoing firefighting efforts. The region is experiencing hot and dry weather, with daytime relative humidity levels in the teens and twenties, resulting in poor overnight recoveries. Light, terrain-driven winds are expected, with occasional gusts reaching up to 17 mph. As the weekend approaches, a gradual cool down is anticipated, which may provide some relief to firefighting operations. Fire management continues to monitor these conditions closely to adapt their strategies effectively.
