2024- Sheering Fire (CASTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Sheering Fire, which ignited on June 24, 2024, near Cherry Lake in Stanislaus National Forest, has now reached a total size of 528 acres and is currently fully contained. This wildfire was one of several sparked by an unusual lightning event that day. Fire managers prioritized resources for this fire due to its location within the historic Rim Fire footprint, which poses significant risks from excessive snags and dead fuel. Despite these challenges, the fire has exhibited low to moderate intensity and a slow rate of spread, allowing for effective containment strategies utilizing natural barriers and existing roads.

Firefighting efforts are being led by a Type 4 Team under Incident Commander Andy Bellar-Mariscal, with approximately 90 personnel currently involved in suppression operations. The primary focus remains on public and firefighter safety, with a full suppression strategy in place. Fire managers have been able to create containment lines around the fire perimeter, leveraging burn scars from previous fires to aid in controlling the Sheering Fire's spread.

Current weather conditions present challenges for the firefighting efforts, as hot and dry weather is expected to continue, with daytime relative humidity levels in the teens and 20s. Winds are generally light but may gust up to 17 mph in the afternoons, which could potentially affect fire behavior. Fire managers plan to conduct direct suppression where possible and scout for indirect options as necessary, maintaining a focus on achieving full containment by the estimated date of July 31, 2024.
