Wildfire Status:
The Happy Fire, which started on July 16, 2024, is currently active in the Monarch Wilderness, situated within the boundaries of Kings Canyon National Park. As of the latest report, the fire has burned approximately 12,543 acres and is 65% contained. The fire is primarily consuming timber, brush, and short grass, and it is burning within the footprint of the 2015 Rough Fire. There has been light smoke observed in the Silver Creek Drainage area, with occasional smoke along the State Highway 180 corridor and within Cedar Grove areas of the national park.
Fire response efforts are being managed by a local team from the U.S. Forest Service, with a total of 45 personnel actively engaged in monitoring and managing the situation. Forest officials are focusing on securing the fire's perimeter along Highway 180 and minimizing potential upslope runs into timber areas within the park. The fire will continue to be monitored until significant rainfall or winter conditions mitigate the threat.
Current weather conditions are a concern for the ongoing firefighting efforts, as a winter storm is forecasted to impact the area with 4-6 inches of snow expected above 5,000 feet, and snow levels potentially dropping to 4,000 feet. This weather pattern could alter fire behavior and support containment efforts. The fire management team is preparing for additional growth in specific drainage areas, with light activity expected over the coming days, but minimal movement anticipated due to cooler temperatures and cloud cover.
