Horseshoe Fire 2024 (CAINF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horseshoe Fire, which began on October 30, 2024, approximately 5 miles southwest of Lone Pine, California, has been a significant incident but is currently under control. As of November 26, the fire has burned approximately 4,537 acres and is now 95% contained. The initial response involved the use of direct hand lines and natural barriers, with helicopters employed to drop water in areas that were inaccessible by foot. Despite the rugged terrain, firefighters effectively utilized natural features such as rock faces to contain the fire.

Recent weather conditions have played a crucial role in the fire's management. After a period of no visible smoke, the area experienced snowfall on November 14 and 15, which contributed significantly to containment efforts. However, on November 22, flames were reported again, prompting evacuations in the surrounding areas, including the De La Cour Lavender Ranch. The fire made a notable run downslope on November 23 due to strong winds, but subsequent precipitation helped slow its spread.

Currently, although the fire is largely contained, there remain sections of open fire lines where access is limited, which could pose a risk of flare-ups. Safety hazards such as debris flows and flooding are anticipated in severely burned areas, leading to the possibility of reissuing evacuation orders. As of November 27, all evacuations and road closures have been lifted. Firefighters from the Inyo National Forest will continue to monitor the area until the fire is officially declared out, ensuring the safety of residents and the surrounding environment.
