Horseshoe Fire 2024 (CAINF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horseshoe Fire, which ignited on October 30, 2024, in rugged terrain near Lone Pine, California, has seen significant developments in its status. Initially mapped at 6.4 acres, the fire experienced a dramatic increase in size following a public report of flames on November 22. By the early hours of November 23, strong west winds caused the fire to make a significant downslope run, ultimately growing to approximately 4,537 acres. However, due to favorable weather conditions, including recent snowfall, the fire's rate of spread has slowed considerably.

Firefighters employed various tactics to combat the blaze, including the use of helicopters for water drops and the construction of contingency lines around vulnerable areas, such as the De La Cour Lavender Ranch. By November 25, aggressive firefighting efforts, combined with the impact of precipitation, led to a containment level of 95%. Although no visible smoke has been detected since the fire was placed in a patrol status on November 16, fire officials remain vigilant due to the potential for small pockets of heat to persist in the area.

As of November 27, all evacuation orders issued by the Inyo County Sheriff's Office have been lifted, marking a significant improvement in the situation. Nevertheless, safety concerns remain regarding potential debris flows, flooding, and rock fall in the most severely burned areas.
