Horseshoe Fire 2024 (CAINF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horseshoe Fire, which ignited on October 30, 2024, in a rugged area southwest of Lone Pine, California, has been the focus of significant firefighting efforts. As of November 23, 2024, the fire has grown to approximately 4,537 acres due to strong west winds that caused a rapid downslope run, spotting embers and spreading the fire across Horseshoe Meadows Road. Despite this increase in size, the fire's rate of spread has since slowed, thanks in part to recent precipitation in the area.

Firefighting teams have utilized a combination of direct hand lines and natural barriers, such as rock faces, to contain the fire. Helicopters were deployed to perform water drops in less accessible areas. Following the initial outbreak, the fire was mapped at 6.4 acres, and by November 16, it was placed in patrol status after significant snowfall helped control it. However, on November 22, flames were reported again, prompting evacuations in Zones 223A, 193, 195, and 197 by the Inyo County Sheriff's Office.

As of the latest updates, containment efforts have reached 95%, with firefighters closely monitoring sections of the fire line that remain inaccessible due to challenging terrain. Although no visible smoke has been reported recently, there is still a potential for small pockets of heat to persist until the area is thoroughly extinguished. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and stay informed about evacuation zones via the READY INYO website due to ongoing risks of debris flows, flooding, and rock falls in the aftermath of the fire.
