Horseshoe Fire 2024 (CAINF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horseshoe Fire, which ignited on October 30, 2024, is currently 100% contained after a series of aggressive firefighting efforts and favorable weather conditions. Initially, the fire was mapped at 6.4 acres, but it surged to approximately 4,537 acres by November 23 due to a significant downslope run caused by strong west winds. Following this event, the fire's rate of spread slowed considerably, aided by a snowfall that occurred on November 14 and 15. Firefighters utilized both direct hand lines and helicopters to manage the fire, employing natural features to contain it effectively.

In response to the fire's resurgence, evacuations were issued for several zones, including the De La Cour Lavender Ranch, as flames were reported along Horseshoe Meadows Road. However, the situation improved rapidly, and by November 25, containment efforts had reached 95%. The incident transitioned to patrol status shortly thereafter. Despite the absence of visible smoke, firefighters remain vigilant, monitoring for any potential hot spots that could reignite.

While the fire is now controlled, there are lingering concerns about safety hazards in the severely burned areas, particularly regarding possible debris flows and flooding. The Inyo County Sheriff's Office has cautioned that evacuation orders or warnings may be reinstated if conditions warrant.
