Wildfire Status:

The Basin Fire, which is currently active in the Sierra National Forest, was detected on June 26, 2024, following a lightning storm that struck the area on June 24, igniting a total of 18 fires. The Basin Fire has rapidly advanced northeast toward Black Rock, burning through a mix of grass, chaparral, and oak timber across steep terrain. As of the latest update, the fire has consumed approximately 14,023 acres and is reported to be 100% contained. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In response to the fire, over a hundred firefighters have been deployed, including Hot Shot crews, hand crews, dozers, and engines, focusing on protecting structures in the Balch Camp area. Air resources from neighboring fires have been reassigned to assist in controlling the Basin Fire. Firefighters are currently engaged in suppression repair efforts across the affected areas to restore the landscape as closely as possible to its natural state. As of July 22, 2024, the incident is being managed under the command of Milam NV Team 4 ICT3.

Weather conditions have been favorable for firefighting efforts, with minimal fire activity characterized by creeping and smoldering. The elevation of the fire ranges from 2000 to 4500 feet, located north of the South Fork of the Kings River and west of Spanish Mountain. With the fire now fully contained, the focus has shifted to suppression repair, and it is expected that no further updates on the Basin Fire will be necessary. The estimated containment date for any remaining hotspots and full restoration efforts is projected for July 31, 2024.
