Wildfire Status:
As of September 15, 2024, the 2024 SQF Lightning wildfire complex, comprised primarily of the Trout Fire and Long Fire in the Sequoia National Forest, is nearing full containment. The Trout Fire has burned approximately 23,822 acres and is currently 98% contained, while the Long Fire has affected 9,204 acres and is 97% contained. The fires were ignited by a lightning storm on July 13, 2024, and have since been closely monitored and managed by fire agencies.
The current response from fire agencies involves a combination of patrol and reassessment of both fires. Fire behavior has been minimal, and no active fire has been detected, indicating that the situation is stable. Personnel have been reassigned as the need for direct firefighting has diminished, focusing instead on monitoring for any potential flare-ups. The incident commander, Rob Hedlund, along with his team, is maintaining a vigilant watch over these areas to ensure that no unexpected changes occur.
Weather conditions in the region are presenting some challenges. For both the Trout and Long Fires, dry conditions are expected to persist, with afternoon highs projected to be 10-12 degrees above normal. Terrain-driven winds are also forecasted, which could pose a risk for any remaining hot spots. Fire agencies are prepared to respond quickly to any changes in fire behavior, but currently, the outlook remains optimistic with no significant incident activity anticipated in the coming days.
