Wildfire Status:
As of October 19, 2024, the Bridge Fire in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness is reported to be 99% contained, though it is not yet fully controlled or extinguished. Firefighters continue to engage the fire in the Iron Fork Canyon area using both aerial support and ground crews. The rugged and steep terrain has made access difficult, contributing to sporadic flare-ups, especially due to the recent strong Santa Ana winds, which reached speeds of up to 50 mph. Approximately 250 additional acres have burned as a result of these conditions, and while there are no current evacuation orders, the potential for further growth remains until full containment is achieved.
State Route 39, also known as San Gabriel Canyon Road, has been temporarily closed to all but residents and property owners due to safety concerns related to the fire and the extreme weather conditions. California Highway Patrol is on-site managing traffic to ensure safety, and access to nearby recreational areas such as Crystal Lake Campground is restricted. Firefighters will continue to monitor the situation closely, with aircraft deployed to drop water on hotspots throughout the night to prevent further spread.
Residents are advised to report any visible smoke or flames by calling 9-1-1. Even within the containment lines, unburned vegetation may continue to smolder, producing smoke that could be visible for some time. In addition, the Angeles National Forest has instituted a closure order for areas impacted by the fire, which will remain in effect until December 31, 2025. Further updates on recovery resources and alerts for affected residents can be found on the respective county websites for San Bernardino and Los Angeles.
