Wildfire Status:
The Eaton Fire, which has been actively burning, is currently at 95% containment as of January 22. Mop-up operations are ongoing around the fire's perimeter, ensuring that any remaining hot spots are extinguished and the risk of flare-ups is minimized. All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted, allowing residents to return home. However, 571 evacuees are still being housed in six shelters, reflecting the ongoing impact of the fire on local communities. Utility services are gradually being restored, with Southern California Gas and Southern California Edison reporting that service has been restored to thousands of structures, although some remain without power.
In terms of fire agency response, significant progress has been made in fire suppression and repair efforts. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a 'Windblown Dust and Ash Advisory', advising residents in the affected area to wear N95 masks due to potential inhalation hazards from ash and dust. Damage assessments have been thorough, with inspection teams having completed evaluations for all structures within the fire's footprint. While the Foothill Municipal Water District is working to fully pressurize the water system by the weekend, a 'Do Not Drink' order remains in effect until testing is complete, which could take up to two weeks.
Weather conditions are shifting, with potential rain in the forecast, prompting residents to prepare for possible flooding and mudslides in burn areas. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works is providing information on free sandbags to help mitigate these risks. Additionally, the entire Angeles National Forest is temporarily closed
