Ruby Fire (WANCP)

Wildfire Status:

The Ruby Fire, ignited by a lightning strike on August 9, 2024, is currently burning on Ruby Mountain within North Cascades National Park, located in Whatcom County, Washington. As of now, the fire has spread across 1,336 acres, with no containment achieved yet. The rugged terrain surrounding the fire poses significant challenges for firefighting operations, making access difficult for personnel. Currently, there are 12 firefighters actively engaged in the response efforts, which are directed by Incident Commander Michael Hansen from the National Park Service.

Fire agencies are focusing on protecting nearby values and infrastructure while assessing the fire's behavior. Planned actions include positioning firefighters strategically and potentially utilizing helicopters for water drops, contingent on prevailing weather conditions. Despite the active fire, the current weather presents a mix of cooler temperatures and a chance of precipitation, which may help mitigate fire activity.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates warmer and drier conditions tomorrow, which could escalate fire behavior. The fire's perimeter remains entirely uncontained, and the estimated containment date is projected for October 31, 2024. Observations of light, active fire behavior have been reported, accompanied by smoke, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and strategic firefighting efforts as conditions evolve.
