Wildfire Status:
The Forsyth Fire, which ignited on June 19, 2025, approximately 15 miles north of St. George, Utah, has now spread to an area of 12,851 acres and is currently 26% contained. The fire was initially sparked by lightning and has been exacerbated by hot, dry conditions and strong winds. Active fire behavior has been observed, with significant challenges posed by dry fuels and critical fire weather conditions, although fragmented fuels have somewhat limited significant growth. The communities of Pine Valley, Grass Valley, and Pinto remain under a "Ready" evacuation status, and the Pine Valley Ranger District has been closed to the public.
Firefighting efforts are being led by the Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 7, with 655 personnel actively engaged in suppression activities. Planned actions include utilizing rappellers and hand crews to secure the fire's edge and constructing direct handlines to strengthen containment efforts. Resources are also patrolling and mopping up areas of heat that could threaten local communities. The Incident Commander, Mike Johnston, along with Deputy Incident Commander Chris Delaney, is overseeing operations aimed at enhancing containment and protecting nearby infrastructure.
Weather conditions remain a critical factor in the firefighting efforts. Low relative humidity and increasing southwest winds are predicted to continue, which may lead to further spread of the fire, particularly towards the North and East along the Left and Middle Fork Santa Clara River drainage. The forecast indicates a high probability of active fire behavior in the coming days, including spotting and group torching, necessitating ongoing vigilance from firefighting teams.
